Father Takes Son on 15-Minute Coffee Dates Every Day to Help Him Adjust to Going to Pre-K

For many kids, entering school or pre-k can be daunting. Not only is it the first time they spend time away from their parents, but it’s also a whole new experience, requiring them to adapt to a completely new environment and routine. For a little boy named Luca, this transition was especially hard. The boy’s father, Louis Roberts, had an idea to hopefully ease Luca’s transition to school life each day. On top of making everything much smoother, it started a cute tradition that they'll cherish for years.

“Luca is very routine-oriented and when he's about to do something new, that's the uncomfortable piece for him,” Roberts told Good Morning America. “So we sort of made a couple of different stops on the way to school just to ease his way into it—one of those stops being at this coffee shop that was right around the corner from us.”

That's when their pre-school coffee dates were born. Every morning, father and son sit at the the coffee shop around the corner of their place for 15 or 20 minutes of quality time before heading to pre-k. “Lou never missed a day unless he was traveling for work,” Maria, Luca's mom, wrote. “They started this routine because Luca was having a hard time transitioning to preschool, and although I wish the first few weeks were easier, I am so happy they have this really special tradition.”

Their little coffee dates have become such a staple that the staff at their coffee shop, bwè kafe, have their drinks ready by the time they show up. “We actually don't even need to make the order anymore,” Roberts says.  “They have my, you know, large cold brew [and] what they call a ‘babyccino,' which is just steamed milk and like a little to-go coffee cup.”

As fun as their father-and-son coffee dates are, they may even get merrier with the addition of another family member. “My daughter goes to Pre-K three next year so I'll have two of them to do it with, so maybe it'll take on a new life,” says Roberts. In addition, Luca has been having coffee dates at the same establishment with his mom on Fridays for over three years. “It's still my favorite way to have uninterrupted time together,” she admits.

It seems that both mother and father have managed to help their kids adapt to change and deepen their bond in a more social setting. “Now that we do it, I can't imagine not doing it,” said Roberts.  “It's actually the best 15 or 20 minutes of my day.”

A little boy named Luca was struggling with the transition of entering pre-k. Hoping to ease this process, his father, Louis Roberts, came up with a plan.

Roberts explains, “We sort of made a couple of different stops on the way to school just to ease his way into it—one of those stops being at this coffee shop that was right around the corner from us.”

Now, father and son sit at the the coffee shop every morning for 15 or 20 minutes of quality time before heading to pre-k. “Now that we do it, I can't imagine not doing it,” Roberts admits. “It's actually the best 15 or 20 minutes of my day.”

105-Year-Old WWII Veteran With No Living Relatives Receives Over 3,000 Birthday Cards

On April 21, 2023, World War II veteran Ernest Horsfall turned an incredible 105 years old. Born in West Yorkshire in 1918, he has lived through 27 different Prime Ministers and five British monarchs and still has plenty of memories about his long life. In the months leading up to his milestone birthday, Royal British Legion made a call for people to send Horsfall birthday cards, as the vet has no living relatives of his own. In the end, Horsfall accumulated over 3,000 birthday cards, including one from King Charles III.

Horsfall served in the British military during WWII, earning the role of a sergeant in the British Army's Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. After leaving the service, he worked as a private pilot for 50 years. Although Horsfall was married and had one son as well as a sister, he has no surviving relatives. “Ernest lives in a residential home and has no immediate family, so the RBL's Blackpool branch have started an appeal to send him birthday cards,” the Royal British Legion tweeted, including also a mailing address for people to send their cards.

“The Second World War generation is inevitably diminishing, but occasions like this are an opportunity for the RBL to remind everyone that their service and sacrifice means something and will never be forgotten,” says Rachel Venables, the membership engagement manager for the Royal British Legion. Horsfall was over the moon to open so many cards. His girlfriend also visited from Iceland to be with him on his special day.

Horsfall credits his long life to “living as happy as you can” and keeping “a straight mind.” We wish him many more happy years.

A World War II veteran in North Carolina enjoyed a very special birthday. On April 25, the Winston-Salem Fire Department invited Jim Lynch for a ride in one of their fire trucks to celebrate turning 100 years old the day before. The centenarian was seen strapped into the back seat of the vehicle and chatting with firefighters in a short video clip.

Lynch moved to Winston-Salem in 1939 and has been a resident ever since. He enlisted in World War II two weeks after getting married, serving in the heavy artillery unit in the South Pacific. After returning to the States, he worked at Salem Electric until retiring in 1985.

The veteran received 80 birthday cards and a visit from the city fire department to mark his landmark birthday. “We got him up and took a picture with him. Then we asked him if he wanted to go on a ride in the fire truck since he was admiring it so much,” a Winston-Salem firefighter said. “At first he was sort of hesitant, and then he said, ‘Yep, I changed my mind. I think I'll go.' So, we helped him into the truck and took him around the block, and he said it was his first ride in a fire truck in 100 years.”

Navajo Technical University Becomes First Tribal University With a PhD Program

Earning a PhD is an impressive feat. Students study and research for years before defending their dissertation in front of a committee of scholars. If successful, they are recognized with this highest degree, connoting mastery of their field of study. Doctoral degrees can be earned in countless subjects at countless schools, but one very unique program is breaking new academic ground. Navajo Technical University has become the first tribal university in the United States to offer a PhD program. The program is a Doctor of Philosophy in Diné Culture and Language Sustainability—and the school hopes future degree-holders will put the skills learned in the program to use for the Navajo community.

The Navajo Nation is a sovereign nation which stretches over 27,000 square miles in the American southwest. It is also known as Diné Bikéyah or Navajoland. The vast reservation covers part of Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. The Navajo people have a rich history, from migrations to the Southwest almost a thousand years ago to the code talkers of World War II. Diné (meaning “the people”) is how the Navajo refer to themselves, their language, and their culture. This Indigenous language is still widely spoken within the Navajo community, but it is considered at risk.

Navajo Technical University—an accredited university with multiple campuses and over 30 degree programs—began in the 1960s as a community education initiative. It has since continued expanding and teaching according to both Western pedagogy and Diné tradition. It previously offered bachelor’s, associate’s, and master’s degrees, in addition to certificate programs. Those programs are now joined by the first PhD program at a tribal college within the United States. Over 20 hopefuls have already applied for five spots in the fall.

To apply, a student must have both a bachelor's and a master's degree already. They must have a certain level of proficiency in Diné culture and language, the study of which they will continue in the program. Once in the program, students will study in courses such as “Language Endangerment and Language Revitalization,” “Syntax and Morphology,” and “Qualitative Research Methods in Diné Culture.” In the program’s final two years (of four in total), students will delve into research and prepare their dissertation. The program will be supervised by Dr. Siri Tuttle and Dr. Franklin Sage (Diné). According to the program webpage, “Dr. Tuttle is a renowned linguist and expert in Athabaskan linguistics and community-based research, while Dr. Sage is a leading scholar in the field of Education and foundation of research, Diné research in culture and history.”

Like many graduates who receive their PhDs, the future scholars may go on to teach after they graduate. As the new degree was created through community collaboration, and incorporates much community scholarship, Navajo Tech President Elmer Guy hopes that graduates will go on to give back to the Navajo community and both enrich and preserve its cultural heritage. “I thought it would be important to make that connection,” Guy said. “Individuals will get a degree and they’ll be professionals. You have to make it applicable. By making it more meaningful, people will have an interest in it.” He also noted, “They will be part of solving problems…These students have energy and creativity, and our job is to give them the tools.”

To learn more about the new program, check out Navajo Tech's website.

Family Adopts “Unicorn” Dog With Bump On Her Head

Every dog is unique in its own way. However, there's only one special pup that has earned the title of “unicorn.”  Strawberry is a 2-year-old pitbull who has a large bump on her head caused by scar tissue from an old injury. Although not life-threatening, this distinctive feature nearly led to Strawberry being euthanized. Luckily, she was rescued by La Belle Foundation, who helped place her in a loving home.

When Strawberry arrived at the LA-based animal rescue organization in 2022, she was in pretty rough shape. “We saw Strawberry’s shelter picture in a state of such neglect and we knew we needed to save her,” says La Belle Foundation. “Her skin was bright pink from infection, covered in mange and she had 2 large lumps on her head. After several weeks of testing, a bone biopsy, and an MRI, we have discovered the lumps on her head are just scar tissue from an old injury and nothing life-threatening.” However, due to the risk of removing the tissue so close to Strawberry's brain, they opted to leave the bump as it was, adding, “We love our little unicorn just the way she is and we know we will find someone who feels the same!”

Under love and care, Strawberry was quickly on the road to recovery. All that was left for the sweet pittie mix was to find a family that could give her the adoration she deserved. Fortunately, when Pasadena mom Kristen Kuhlman came across Strawberry's photo, she was immediately drawn to her gentle eyes. “She's very unique and recognizable and one in a million, one of a kind,” Kuhlman says. “She fits right into our family. It's been great.” We hope Strawberry continues to live her bet life in her new home.

Strawberry, a “unicorn” dog with a bump on her head, was saved from euthanasia by being adopted by a loving family.

Side-by-side photos of former trash collector Rehan Staton and then as a Harvard Law student

Rehan Staton first made waves in 2020 after he was accepted into Harvard Law School. His road there wasn't easy. He became a sanitation worker to help his family make ends meet. Then, in a truly selfless act of unconditional love, his brother Reggie dropped out of college so that Staton afford to go. Now, three years later, all the obstacles are now behind him and Staton is about to earn his degree. In celebration of this incredible achievement, he wants to honor the sacrifices made by those who love him. To do so, Staton is giving back to the profession that supported him and his family for many years.

Staton's story is an inspiring one that began with great uncertainty. After being rejected by multiple colleges when he was about to graduate from high school, he took a job collecting trash and cleaning dumpsters. For the young man, who saw his life upended at 8 when his mother left the family, he had a hard time dealing with the circumstances, which reflected in his grades. “I did so bad in school that no colleges took me at any level,” he told FOX5 Atlanta.

It was his fellow sanitation workers—many of whom were formerly incarcerated individuals—who encouraged him to acknowledge his great potential. “It was the first time in my life a group of people really just empowered me, uplifted me, told me I was intelligent,” Staton shared in 2020. “I believed in the hype, and I was ready to go to school.” And that's exactly what he did. He attended Bowie State University while working a full-time job in sanitation and then transferred to Maryland State University. His trajectory completely changed with the confidence instilled in him by his fellow laborers. His grades were finally strong enough to get him accepted to one of the top schools in the world—Harvard University. Staton shared the moment he got his acceptance letter from Harvard and that's when his story really made an impact.

Now, three years in, the soon-to-be graduate has co-created The Reciprocity Effect. This organization strives to offer visibility to janitors and support staff across many fields. “The Reciprocity Effect honors support staff affiliated with educational institutions and corporations and aids those affected by personal hardships and catastrophes,” states the organization's website. So far, Staton has raised $70,000 for these workers.

Aware of the lengths these staff members go, The Reciprocity Effect describes janitors and support staff as the “unsung heroes of educational institutions and corporations.” On top of the donations, the organization also holds awards ceremonies for exceptional workers. The first of these took place at Staton's alma mater, where 170 attendees—mostly students—showed up to cheer for Harvard Law School's support staff.

While some have criticized his efforts, stating that the staff is already being paid for their work, he explains how they do a lot more, which often goes unnoticed. “They act like our counselors. They’re like our surrogate parents. They go above and beyond.” To him, reciprocity is about making sure everybody wins, adding, “The support staff are happier. That would make us happier, and then that would give them a better work product. That would give us a better work product.”

To keep up to date with Staton's progress and what this bright young man has in store for the future, you can follow his organization, The Reciprocity Effect, on Instagram.

Three years ago, Rehan Staton made national headlines for his incredible transition from sanitation worker to Harvard Law student.

Now, he is about to earn his degree and the determined young man hasn't forgotten his humble beginnings. He is giving back to the profession that supported him and his family for many years.

Long-Time Shelter Dog Says Goodbye to Each Staff Member With a Sweet Kiss Jax the Dog Hugging His New Pawrent

All pets deserve to have their furever homes, but some take a little longer to find them. Until then, they often stay in an animal shelter just waiting for that special person (or people) to come along. A pup named Jax was a long-time resident at the Regina Humane Society who wanted nothing more than to find a home.

Jax was brought to the shelter without many details, but it was clear he had spent some time on the streets by himself. He was very thin when he came to the Regina Humane Society and was also ravenous. After getting him fed and officially putting him up for adoption, he developed pneumonia and went into medical care. Once he was back on the adoptable list, people continued to pass him by. But why? The staff there loved Jax and were saddened each time his kennel was ignored.

The sweet pup, the shelter surmised, just wanted to be around people. “It wasn’t anything aggressive,” explained Bill Thorn, the Regina Humane Society’s director. “He was really suffering from something known as barrier frustration. He’s a super nice dog, but there was a barrier in his kennel, and he couldn’t get to people to be with them. He just wanted to be petted, but it could often be off-putting for people.”

A sign on Jax’s kennel explaining his situation didn’t help. That’s when the staff decided to bring him up to their reception area where he was able to showcase his endearing personality. “During that time, he became a bit of a staff favorite because we all knew how nice of a dog he was, but we just had to get him into a place where he could show that.”

It took many months, but Jax finally found his human. After being at Regina Humane Society for so long, the staff couldn’t just send him off without a proper goodbye. They lined up, and each person crouched down and clapped for the pup as he left for his new home. In a heartwarming video captured by the shelter, Jax gives a little kiss to each person before going into the arms of his new dad.

“It was an incredibly sweet moment to end his long stay at the shelter,” the video is captioned. “Have a great life, Jax!”

Depending on your job, you may have the chance to make a kid's day while at work. Or even better, you may have memories of an adult going the extra mile just to make you smile. For a group of construction workers, the opportunity popped up in the form of a toy truck. Excited to see some building work being done in the area, a small boy paid a visit with his tiny truck as if to join the action. What happened next is something that the little one will surely cherish forever.

The heartwarming moment was captured in a video that has since gone viral. Wanting to be a part of it all and hoping to see the big excavator at work, the kid placed his wheeled toy under the big metal claw. The machine operator, moved by it all, obliged and filled the toy truck with dirt. With careful precision, as if it were a crucial part of the construction work being done, he made the little boy's dreams come true. While it's hard to pinpoint the location or the time from the video alone, the giddiness of the kid as the claw slowly fills the mini dump truck is universally endearing. Even the other construction workers stop for a while to witness the cute scene. All the while, the kid's mom holds him firmly to keep everyone safe until the toy truck is full and the claw is still.

While anyone can appreciate the sweetness of a group of adults taking a few minutes to put a smile on a child's face, the video has had all kinds of positive responses. For some, it brought back memories of seeing construction work and big machines when they were little and being blown away. For others, it allowed them to marvel at the unexpected delicacy of the imposing machine (with a Reddit user pointing out that, the bigger the machine, the smoother the movements). If there's one thing we all can agree on, it's that the boy wasn't the only one who benefitted from this tiny action. As one Redditor wrote, “I used to work in the field. I can tell you it made everyone's day.”

In 2014, the world of film—and film audiences—lost a great light. The actor Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away tragically at age 46 after a brilliant career spanning from cult classics like The Big Lebowski to an Academy Award for his performance in Capote. Born and raised in Fairport, a suburb of Rochester, New York, Hoffman has been greatly missed by many, particularly in his hometown. Now his likeness is immortalized in bronze outside the iconic George Eastman Museum in Rochester, a pilgrimage site for film lovers around the world.

The life-sized statue was originally created for a New York City site, but it fit so well at a temporary exhibit at the museum that organizers donated it permanently. Designed by David A. Annand and commissioned by producer James Declan Tobin, the statue depicts Hoffman happily striding with a script in hand. He appears to be headed to the Dryden Theater, the museum's specialty cinema which screens old movies—including incredibly rare original, nitrate films. The museum itself is situated in the elegant mansion of George Eastman, founder of the Eastman Kodak Company.

The institution is the world's oldest museum dedicated to photography. Its photography collections and motion picture film archives are legendary and responsible for preserving much of 20th-century visual history. “The greatest actor of my generation has come home to the community that loves him,” Tobin said of the statue's placement. “This is where Phil belongs. I wanted a home that is worthy of Phil, and we have it at the Dryden Theatre, which is a classic temple of film. He is on the move, a script in his bag, walking toward the theater he so loved.”

Hoffman's mother, Marilyn O'Connor, approved of the “loving memorial” to her beloved son. “The Eastman Museum's decision to retain the sculpture makes me very happy,” she said. “There was an enthusiastic response to having this beautiful statue of Phil at the museum. This is what the Rochester community wanted.”

For those in the area, or who wish to visit, the museum is also running a series of Hoffman's film all year, totaling 24 works. “There was a lot of silence after Phil died,” Tobin said. “He was with us, so brilliant, so powerfully present, and then he slipped away. I wanted to keep the light going. I wanted Phil's family to know the impact he had on me and the world.”
