A TikToker named Julia is making her grandmother’s dreams come true. When visiting her grandma Georgie in January 2021, Julia began looking through sketches of dresses that Georgie designed when she was a teenager. Julia’s grandmother, it turns out, had wanted to be a fashion designer. She even attended school for it in the 1940s but was forced to drop out to care for ailing family members. Her designs stayed on paper for decades until her granddaughter came across them.

“I knew grandma was talented, but I was like, wow, these are really much better than what I was envisioning in my head,” Julia said. “And she mentioned that when she dies, she wanted them to get sent out to magazines or displayed at her funeral.”

But Julia didn’t see why they had to wait to experience her grandmother’s creativity. She posted the sketches on TikTok, briefly sharing Georgie's story. The video went viral, and Julia started to learn basic sewing skills to make the designs a reality.

Using material leftover from her grandmother’s collection of vintage fabrics as well as thrifted materials, Julia has sewn many of the garments Georgie envisioned. She notes that she doesn’t always follow her “grandma sketch,” as what looks good on paper might not translate onto the body. “Grandma encourages that,” Julia explains.

This ongoing intergenerational collaboration has led to a captivating—and extremely popular—TikTok series in which Julia shows Georgie what she’s created. It’s also sparked sweet conversations between the two of them, which are shared on video. And in one of the greatest moments of the project so far, Julia even got to debut the designs at New York Fashion Week 2023. (Georgie couldn’t attend, but she watched the live stream.)

Check out the designs below.

A TikToker named Julia is making her grandmother’s dreams come true. When she found her grandma's fashion sketches from the 1940s, she knew she wanted to bring them to life.

@boringbb Which one should I make next? Yesterday grandma said “I lived long enough to see one of them come off the paper” I don’t think it should stop with this dress #grandmasoftiktok #vintagefashion #sewingforyoupage ♬ Dreamy – Elijah Lee

Her grandma, Georgie, is delighted.

@boringbb The second design I made of Grandma’s. I ‘m starting with some of the easier ones and working my way up. This design was so summery I wanted to knock it out before it gets cold here. #grandmasoftiktok #reveal #suprise #sewingforyoupage ♬ Possibility – Lykke Li

@boringbb This is the 3rd ‘grandma design’ I have recreated. Of course, I usually make a few changes but I made sure to keep the 50’s silhouette. This skirt is so flattering. I will definitely be making more dresses using a similar 50’s skirt style. I feel like I should be going to halloweentown prom in this. #fashiondesigner #suprise #grandma #1950sfashion ♬ original sound – Julia

@boringbb I’ve had some requests for some very basic sewing 101 videos- so this is how I seam rip #sewingtutorial #sewingbeginner #sewing101 ♬ original sound – Julia

Julia started to learn basic sewing skills to make the designs a reality.

@boringbb I feel like I should be going to an 80’s prom in this dress #fashiondesigner #fashiondesign #vintagefashion ♬ original sound – Reid

@boringbb A slower look at my grandma’s sketch from the 40’s vs. what I created #fashiondesigner #fashiondesign #sewingdiy ♬ original sound – unchained

Not every creation follows the “grandma sketch,” as what looks good on paper might not translate onto the body.

@boringbb Replying to @shaeved grandma knows I dont have to skill nor wallet to give her sketches the perfect real life versions. She just enjoys getting to see the general idea of her designs come to life. Grandma is also big on sustainability. Her favorite design I have made of her is when I used her old bedspread to make a dress. #fashiondesign #fashiondesigner #vintagefashion ♬ original sound – Julia

@boringbb I really didn’t expect her to have this reaction! #fashiondesigner #runwayready #fashiondesign #newyorkfashionweek ♬ original sound – Julia

In the two years that Julia has been working on the project, she was able to debut the designs at New York Fashion Week 2023. (Georgie watched the show from a live stream.)

@boringbb My collection at the @thesocietyfashionweek show! I ‘m very happy to say this small collection (other than the thread) is 100% thrifted or repurposed material. I wanted to show sustainable fashion can be beautiful. #fashionshow #runwayshow #nyfw #fashiondesigner ♬ GIVE IT TO ME X LONDON BRIDGE – ALTÉGO

Incense can truly transform the vibe of a room. Whether you use it for aromatherapy, meditation, or simply because you love the smell, incense can elevate a regular space into a relaxing environment. But did you know that incense can also add to the aesthetic of the place it is burning in? While there are plenty of incense holders and burners in the market, there's a particular design that looks like it’s straight out of a folk tale.

The Dragon Waterfall Incense Burner takes the smoke emanating from the incense cone and, instead of letting it evaporate into the room, transforms it into a waterfall that comes out of a dragon's mouth. The mythical creature seems to be posed around the teardrop-shaped burner, as if guarding it. The consistency of the smoke allows it to fall from one pit into the other throughout the vessel, creating a steady flow.

The charm of this incense burner was shared in a video posted to Reddit, where it earned over 54,000 upvotes. Seconds after the cone is placed atop the incense holder, the smoke starts to “pour” out of the dragon, creating a hypnotic scene. If watching it unfold on a screen is enthralling, imagine adding the intense aromas of incense to that vision. It's sure to encourage a sense of calm and help you unwind at the end of the day.

To ensure this incense burner works as depicted in the video, it's important to take into account the external factors needed. The effect of the smoke flow won't run in a drafty room or one with a fan on; on the other hand, a room with very still air will make it overflow at the bottom, so balance is key. Should the latter happen, Redditors recommend wiping it right off to prevent build up. For a better effect, others advise chilling the burner to make the smoke cold and help it circulate as intended.

If you love this dragon incense burner, you can get your own at ZenMood's Etsy shop.

Ingenious Measuring Cup for Instant Ramen Makes Cup Noodles Even Easier to Prepare

Instant ramen is beloved around the world for its immediacy, affordability, and taste. On top of being cheap, almost anyone is within a reasonable distance to purchasing and stocking up on the self-contained and filling meal. And the preparation? Just add boiling water and wait for a few minutes. It couldn’t get any easier…or could it? Nissin, the creators of Cup Noodles (better known as Cup Noodle in Japan), seem to have come up with an invention to further simplify the process—a measuring cup shaped like a Cup Noodle. And for diehard fans of the iconic instant meal, it’s an item they didn't know they needed.

In late April, Cup Noodle Japan posted a picture of their latest creation to Twitter. It’s branded like a regular Cup Noodle; except, the quirky container is made of a clear material. What makes it stand out is that the units of liquid measurement aren't in the metric or imperial system. Instead, the three marks correspond to the three Cup Noodle sizes available in the Japanese market: Cup Noodle Mini, regular Cup Noodle, and Cup Noodle Big.

If you eat instant noodles often, you may be wondering about the actual use of this measuring cup. After all, the styrofoam containers have a line inside indicating how much water is needed for the noodles to be properly cooked. Nevertheless, not everyone has a hot water dispenser at hand—especially when away from home or in a hurry—so the measuring cup hopes to shut down the guesswork of  how much water you need to boil. No more undercooked noodles!

It is not immediately clear whether Nissin will actually produce and sell these measuring cups, but the reaction from their followers has been overwhelmingly positive. The original tweet has earned more than 140,000 likes, and people have replied with messages about how they always boil too much water. People anre also begging the company to actually release the cups. Whether as a handy tool or a novelty collector’s item, the measuring cup would likely be a hit.

Just in time to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Mattel has announced a new Barbie doll honoring Anna May Wong. A trailblazing movie star from the first half of the 20th century, Wong is widely considered to be the first Chinese American female actor in Hollywood.

The Anna May Wong doll is part of the Barbie Inspiring Women series, which has immortalized other cultural icons such as Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, and Sally Ride. “As the first Asian American actor to lead a U.S. television show, whose perseverance broke down barriers for her gender and AAPI community in film and TV, Anna May Wong is the perfect fit for our Barbie Inspiring Women Series,” said Mattel's executive vice president, Lisa McKnight.

Mattel worked closely with Anna Wong, the actor's niece, to develop the doll's look. “I did not hesitate at all. It was such an honor and so exciting,” she told AP News. “I wanted to make sure they got her facial features and clothing correct. And they did!” Wong’s niece added that she had a Barbie growing up, so she loves the idea of Asian children having a doll who looks like them.

Designed by Carlyle Nuera, the new Barbie doll features Wong’s signature blunt bangs and pencil-thin eyebrows, as well as red lipstick and dramatic eye makeup. She is dressed in a red evening gown with a golden dragon design and a long sheer shawl, along with golden earrings and heels. Her elegant outfit is inspired by her appearance in Limehouse Blues (1934).

Born in Los Angeles in 1905, Wong grew up seeing movie crews around her neighborhood. She landed her first leading role in The Toll of the Sea (1922) at age 17, before making a swift transition to the sound film era. Her filmography includes The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong, the first-ever U.S. television show starring an Asian American as a series lead. She was also the first Asian American woman to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for acting.

On top of her screen work, Wong was considered one of the best dressed women of her time. She was known for mixing flapper style with traditional Chinese garments and bold accessories. Despite reaching international success, Wong struggled with stereotypes in the film industry, which led her to advocate for greater representation of Asian American actors in Hollywood.

Before getting her own Barbie, Wong also made history a few months ago when she became the first Asian American to appear on U.S. currency as part of the American Women Quarters program.

If you'd like to get your own Anna May Wong doll, this limited-edition Barbie is now available for pre-order via Target and Mattel.

The first Monday in May can only mean one thing—it's time for the Met Gala in New York City. The fundraising fête for the Metropolitan Museum of Art is “fashion’s biggest night out,” when A-listers take risks with their style all in the name of honoring the event's theme. This year's prompt was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” after the famed German-born designer Karl Lagerfeld. During his decades-long career, the controversial fashion figure was best known as a creative director for Fendi and Chanel, always donning dark sunglasses (even indoors).

Guests were asked to dress “in honor of Karl,” which lent itself to a wide array of interpretations. Two of the most creative—and fun—riffs on the theme came from Doja Cat and Jared Leto. Both of them channeled Choupette, Lagerfeld’s beloved cat.

Doja Cat opted for a slightly subtler take on a feline, choosing to wear a custom dress affixed with bejeweled cat ears and prosthetics that made her nose look like a feline. Leto, conversely, went big (literally) with a larger-than-life catsuit that was complete with a giant head like a mascot. He didn’t remove the head at first, surprising many guests as they questioned who was underneath the outfit.

While Doja Cat and Leto made headlines with their ensembles, they weren’t the only ones who stunned with glamorous looks. Scroll down to see outfits from the 2023 Met Gala.

The Met Gala 2023 stunned, as always, with its fashion. Here are some of the best looks from the night.

65 Creative Graduation Caps Worn by Crafty Grads

In the past, the humble graduation hat was merely part of the customary and ceremonial “cap and gown” ensemble.  Today, however, it has been transformed into a canvas for crafty graduates looking to show off their amazing crafting skills and go out with a bang. Ceremonies are made all the brighter and more entertaining thanks to the crafty grads' premeditated graduation cap ideas—which include clever, comical, and creative designs.

This collection of quirky caps ranges in style, concept, and inspiration. Many reference pop culture staples spanning well-known films, iconic television shows, and beloved childhood cartoon characters. On the opposite side of the spectrum, some convey political and social undertones with inspirational graduation quotes. Still, a large portion of these caps simply act as “thank you” notes to those who made it all possible: friends, family, and, of course, coffee.

In the last couple of years, with politics seeming to seep into every aspect of life, there has been a surge in political activism shining through graduates’ crafted caps. Students who are immigrants or whose parents have migrated from another country are proudly expressing how their family’s dreams are coming to fruition. Many people migrate to another country in order to lead a better life for their families, and education is one of the many privileges they seek out. As a result, these accessories are more than fancy headgear to them—they’re a symbol of success and a platform to show pride in their accomplishments.

Renowned for both its experimental nature and ethereal aesthetic, resin is proving particularly popular among today's top creatives. While the compound—which can be cultivated naturally or synthetically created—has traditionally been used in polishes and varnishes, many contemporary artists and designers are finding new and inventive ways to incorporate the malleable material into their practice. Lustrous like glass but compositionally similar to plastic, resin effortlessly pairs form with functionality, resulting in an endless amount of artistic possibilities.

Here, we will learn more about this versatile medium and how you can start creating resin art, yourself. Additionally, we will take a look at an eclectic selection of resin art, from spectacular sculptural works and three-dimensional “paintings” made on unconventional canvases to twinkling jewelry and avant-garde furniture. Dazzling and diverse, this collection of crystalline art showcases the versatility and beauty of the remarkable material.

What is Resin?

Resin, or epoxy resin, is a synthetic material that can be combined with other objects to create many different types of art. The type of resin that is used in art usually begins as a viscous substance and is then cured into a rigid form. While it is a liquid resin, it can be manipulated by adding ingredients and other materials, and once it is fully cured, it is extremely durable and can withstand extreme temperatures.

Typically, it is a “thermosetting plastic” that is mixed in a ratio two parts—a methyl methacrylate liquid has a catalyst added to it which causes it to set into a transparent form. For this reason, it's sometimes referred to as AB resin.

UV resin is also a popular type of material to use for smaller objects. Unlike AB resin, this form of it is solar activated; just put it in the sun or under a UV light and it will cure in just minutes.

Resin can be removed using chemical solvents like IPA, or isopropyl alcohol.

Resin Art Supplies

Resin is rarely used by itself. In art, it typically has components added like pigment powder to create a colorful hue, or it's used to encase objects such as dried leaves, flowers, sand, or small charms. Here are the general supplies you'll need to get started (although your tools might change based on your project):

  • Epoxy or Casting Resin — There are different types of resin available on the market, but you’ll want to look for one that that has “epoxy” or “casting resin” on the label. They will come in packs of two; one will be a catalyst that creates the chemical reaction to harden the resin. (Try these highly rated resins that are geared towards artists: Art ‘N Glow’s Clear Casting and Coating Epoxy ResinArtResin’s Clear Epoxy Resin; and Clear Castin Resin with Catalyst)
  • UV Resin — If you're interested in using solar-activated resin, crafters swear by DecorRom's non-toxic formula.
  • Epoxy Resin Pigment — Want to add some color to your creations? DecorRom sells a set of 23 color pigments that are made for different types of epoxy resin.
  • Disposable Cups — You will have to mix your two-part resin together, and you will want to do so in a disposable container. This set of clear plastic cups has graduated markings on the side.
  • Wood Sticks — Mixing epoxy resin is a science. You’ll also want a set of wood sticks for stirring.
  • Disposable Gloves — Again, since you’re dealing with chemicals, you’ll want to protect yourself the best you can. Invest in a pair of latex gloves to keep your hands safe.

American toy company Mattel continues to expand its range of diverse and inclusive Barbies with its latest addition—a doll with Down syndrome. This model is part of the Barbie Fashionistas line, a collection that features dolls of different body types, ethnicities, disabilities, and more. With this new Barbie, toy manufacturer Mattel hopes to help more children find representations of themselves in the toys they play with.

The Down syndrome doll was made in collaboration with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) in the U.S., which oversaw the design of the Barbie to ensure it included characteristics of those who have the condition, including a shorter frame and longer torso. There are also many thoughtful details incorporated into the outfit of the Barbie. For instance, her puff-sleeve mini dress is decorated in a blue and yellow floral print with pink butterflies. Blue and yellow are the colors of Down syndrome awareness, and butterflies symbolize the condition. Even her pink neckless includes a pendant with three arrows, representing the third 21st chromosome that people with Down syndrome have. It also coordinates with the ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) which support her as she walks.

“This means so much for our community, who, for the first time, can play with a Barbie doll that looks like them,” says Kandi Pickard, NDSS president and CEO. The new model has already sparked positive reactions from those who have Down syndrome, including British model Ellie Goldstein. She shared a video of her reaction to the doll. “When I saw the doll I felt so emotional, and proud,” she says. “It means a lot to me that children will be able to play with the doll and learn that everyone is different…Diversity is important as people need to see more people like me out there in the world and not be hidden away, Barbie will help make this happen.”

The model will retail for $10.99. You can learn more about the Barbie and where to buy it by visiting Mattel's website.

Mattel has launched a Barbie with Down syndrome, adding to its diverse array of dolls.
