The first Monday in May can only mean one thing—it's time for the Met Gala in New York City. The fundraising fête for the Metropolitan Museum of Art is “fashion’s biggest night out,” when A-listers take risks with their style all in the name of honoring the event's theme. This year's prompt was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” after the famed German-born designer Karl Lagerfeld. During his decades-long career, the controversial fashion figure was best known as a creative director for Fendi and Chanel, always donning dark sunglasses (even indoors).

Guests were asked to dress “in honor of Karl,” which lent itself to a wide array of interpretations. Two of the most creative—and fun—riffs on the theme came from Doja Cat and Jared Leto. Both of them channeled Choupette, Lagerfeld’s beloved cat.

Doja Cat opted for a slightly subtler take on a feline, choosing to wear a custom dress affixed with bejeweled cat ears and prosthetics that made her nose look like a feline. Leto, conversely, went big (literally) with a larger-than-life catsuit that was complete with a giant head like a mascot. He didn’t remove the head at first, surprising many guests as they questioned who was underneath the outfit.

While Doja Cat and Leto made headlines with their ensembles, they weren’t the only ones who stunned with glamorous looks. Scroll down to see outfits from the 2023 Met Gala.

The Met Gala 2023 stunned, as always, with its fashion. Here are some of the best looks from the night.

From blooming flowers to a library of books, Sylvie Facon’s dresses bring enchanting storybooks to life. Based in France, she combines embroidery, beading, and painting to create one-of-a-kind garments that look like works of art.

Due to the level of detail in these magical gowns, it should come as no surprise that they can take hundreds of hours to complete. This is because Facon has to use her skills to embellish delicate fabrics such as tulle and silk with her illustrations. In one dress, for instance, a garden of purple flowers grows from the bodice, blooming into the straps that keep the dress in place. Another features a painting of a scenic place, which is made three-dimensional through stitching and beading.

Typically, Facon contains the most detailed elements of her designs to the bodice of the dress. However, she usually tries to connect the art that is placed there with the gown below. Oftentimes this means matching the colors, creating a pleasing transition from one section to another. This can be seen in her book-inspired garment, which makes it look like the model is wrapped in a library. Facon cleverly divides the skirt into panels. each one embellished in such a way that it looks like the spine of a book.

You can find her dresses available for purchase via Facon's website, and keep up to date with her latest creations by following her on Instagram.

Aging is a natural part of life, yet it has long been stigmatized. Luckily, many people are speaking up to change that. Even better, some are having a lot of fun and liberating themselves while doing so. Candace Leslie Cima is a 76-year-old fashion and lifestyle influencer working to change the attitudes regarding aging for both her generation and the ones following hers. Whether she's sharing her favorite outfits of the week or speaking candidly about how to face the passage of time, Cima has become an advocate for the visibility of older women via her social media presence, an ongoing documentation aptly called Life in My 70s.

Cima's story as an influencer began at 72, when she first got an Instagram account. Curious about what influencers were, she took a deep dive, only to find that there weren't that many voices in her age group. Determined to send a message out, she began a fashion-dedicated account and from there built a following on multiple platforms, including TikTok, to speak about what was mostly on her mind—aging. “I remember being on the checkout line at a supermarket and looking at the headlines on those magazines. They would always have headlines like ‘How to look your best at 20, 30, and 40.' Never did they mention 50, 60, and 70,” she recalls in a video about her wish to understand the stigma around aging.

So what easier way to initiate a conversation than by openly being yourself? In one of her most popular videos, Cima appears to respond to someone criticizing her choice to wear sleeveless tops. “You’re 60, you shouldn’t wear that,” she quotes a detractor before replying, “I am actually 75,” and walking up and down her kitchen like it was a high-fashion runway. In other videos, we can see her confidently walking by a pool deck in a bathing suit, giving styling tips, or showcasing her strength by climbing a tree.

In addition to her videos, Cima also has a blog where she speaks at length about aging and fashion, making it as accessible as possible for women of all walks of life. After all, everyone ages, so we all as a society should normalize these changes and learn to see them positively. For her, age is not just a number, it's a badge of honor to wear proudly. “The only way that view is going to change is if we as older women show them that aging is a gift, something to be embraced, valued and shared,” she writes. “A culmination of years of discovery and learning that allows us to be the best version of ourselves. Then when and where we can, helping other women to do the same.”

Clothing by the fashion house Christian Dior speaks for itself. So when creating a space for an extensive retrospective, the setting must be as exquisite as the garments—without overpowering the designs on view. Architect Shohei Shigematsu, a partner at Dutch studio OMA, has done that with the interior design for the Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

The incredible exhibition features clothing, purses, periodicals, and more, all among alluring sets. One of the standouts is a pyramidal staircase that features 35 pieces of Dior haute-couture. The mannequins are set on platforms within the staircase, which itself illuminates with animations.

Each exhibition space references elements that are shared between Japanese tradition and culture as well as Dior’s history and its contemporary clothing collections. The pyramidal staircase, for instance, is inspired by “long, processional stairs” leading to traditional Japanese shrines. But overall, the elements are wide-ranging and refer to themes in the fashion house's work, construction techniques, and more.

Shigematsu, it turns out, was just the right person to design the interior. “The fashion exhibition is a domain that requires architecture to become a narrative medium. We wanted to expand and diversify potentials for storytelling through a retrospective that not only looks back at history but brings new life and relevance to today’s culture. As a Japanese architect trained and operating in the West, it was exciting to discover Dior’s relationship and history with Japan,” Shigematsu explains. “The exhibition experience is designed to take others on a similar journey of discovery, highlighting new synergies between Japan and France, architecture and couture, tradition, and innovation.”

Spaces alternate between light and dark, expansive and intimate, rigid and fluid, all to “take visitors on a multi-dimensional journey of discovery.” The result of these careful and deliberate considerations are displays in which every element feels at home in its exact setting. This doesn’t always happen with exhibitions, particularly in a “white box” gallery, but it's all perfectly in sync here.

Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams is on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo until May 28, 2023.

Architecture firm OMA set the stage for an incredible Dior exhibition by creating settings that are as exquisite as the clothing.

There's nothing that says spring quite like flowers. And whether fresh or artificial, colorful blooms are a great way to jazz up your style. Specifically, if you are looking to add a bit of charm to your hairstyle, incorporating flowers into your hair is a great way to go. While floral hair accessories are often associated with brides, there are also plenty of casual accessories that can be worn every day.

And, it doesn't matter whether you have a short style or love long braids, as there are hair clips, combs, bobby pins, and scarves that are suited for all styles. If you like to stand out in a crowd, you might like a large flower hairpin. Or, if you are looking for something more subtle, some beautiful barrettes made from smaller, fresh flowers will do the trick.

Whether it's a special occasion or a wedding, a hair vine can provide a touch of class. If you are looking for a tropical vibe, there's even a bird-of-paradise comb that will make you feel like you're in Hawaii. Anyone looking for something more casual will also appreciate some cute daisy ponytail holders or a floral hair scarf that also doubles as a scrunchie.

Check out all of our ideas for how to incorporate flowers into your hair thanks to these creative accessories and start celebrating spring in style.

Titled What the Super Mario, these mismatched sneakers are inspired by The Super Mario Bros. movie—due to release in April—and all of the characters from the iconic game series. Each section of the low-top shoe design is filled with colors and patterns that evoke the aesthetics of Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Yoshi, and more characters, not to mention items and motifs from iconic stages in the game.

Chiou shared his customized sneakers on his Instagram with the caption, “Mashup of some of my favorite characters/ items in Super Mario.” Although it may be hard to unpack the assortment of colors and motifs, each section can be traced to certain aspects of the game. For instance, on the top of the right shoe is a large question mark over a yellow background, referencing the Mystery Box graphic. Similarly, a panel on the inside of the left shoe features a red polka dot pattern similar to the mushrooms in the game and the character Toad.

There is a myriad of clever touches sewn into the design which showcase Chiou's attention to detail and love for the Super Mario universe. Princess Peach's pink gown can be seen in the tongue of the left shoe, for example, and Donkey Kong's fur is represented with a suede-looking material that wraps around the back of the right shoe. The shoes wouldn't be complete, however, without a nod to Mario himself, which Chiou does with the red heel of the left shoe, which sports the same distinct M that Mario wears on his cap.

Right now, the Super Mario sneakers are only conceptual, but the buzz it’s getting lead to more in the future. You can see more custom designs on Chiou's website and keep up to date with his latest creations by following him on Instagram.

39 Amazing National Costumes From the Mister Global 2022 Male Beauty Pageant Mister Global 2022 National Costumes

Thirty-nine men from around the globe competed in the eighth edition of the Mister Global beauty competition. Held in Thailand on February 11, the contestants competed in different categories like interviews and formal wear. But perhaps the most highly anticipated category is when everyone dons their national costumes. Intended to represent each contestant's national identity, there is a lot tied up in each outfit.

As always, this year's national costumes were impressive. All of the contestants modeled for a photoshoot to show off their outfits and were judged after a runway presentation. This year's Best National Costume prize went to Mark Avendaño of the Philippines. His glammed-up take on the jeepneys that provide much of the country's public transportation won the judges over.

Some costumes were definitely made to dazzle while a few took a laid-back approach. Mister Global 2022 winner Juan Carlos Ariosa of Cuba didn't hold back with his national costume. It included an elaborate headpiece and a full set of wings. On the other side of the spectrum, Mister Poland looked like a character from The Matrix in a sleek long black coat.

While these photos by David Ryo certainly show off the costumes, it's also worth checking out the video of the National Costume portion of the pageant. Seeing each man present their look adds a new dimension to the costumes.

Scroll down to see all 39 looks from Mister Global 2022. And don't worry, you won't have to wait long for even more looks to arrive. The 2023 edition of the contest will be held in Thailand this November before future editions rotate to different host countries.

Artisan Transforms Old Leather Couches Into Stylish One-of-a-Kind Purses Upcycled Handbags From Couch

With the right skills and an eye for sustainability, Lisa Crick transforms old leather couches into stylish handbags. The large pieces of furniture—still with life left—become the raw materials for her purses. The shiny blues and soft browns of her bags show the power of upcycling and highlight how we don’t need to produce more to have more; we need to get creative with what’s already available. You'd never realize these bags were once chairs.

Crick had the upcycling idea four years ago when she decided to make bags from old curtains. “Since then,” she tells My Modern Met, “I’ve been honing my craft and teaching myself to sew with anything that I could get a needle through. After all, just how much waste material and clothing do we have?” She created a business called New Baginnings to sell the things she’s made.

While perfecting her skills, a friend gave her a well-worn leather chair to use. “The leather was so beautiful,” Crick recalls, “where age and time had given it a patina of life. I made a bag.” She then logged onto Facebook Marketplace and saw just how many “free to collector” chairs and couches were available. If they weren’t taken, then they were headed to the landfill.

Crick has taken advantage of this free raw material, but it’s not without a lot of work. “The first sofa I stripped and turned into bags had a big water stain on the seat but was a stunner nonetheless,” she explains. “I stripped it and repurposed the leather into a ToteBag to start, sent a pic back to the sofa owner who asked to buy it! At that point, I knew I had something good—if you're prepared to give me something for free and then I sell it back to you…”

Beyond making things that are beautiful, Crick finds it very rewarding and satisfying to create something out of an object that was once considered waste. “I make a beautiful bag from something that was ugly—it was never ugly just needed a new approach to its beauty. We’re quick to accept a rip or a tear or a mark of an imperfection as something that is no longer wanted, needed, or even accepted, so by repurposing it and showing you it in a different light.”

Crick sells her bags through Facebook. Visit her New Baginnings shop there to see what she’s got on sale next.

When the Oscars are on the horizon, Vanity Fair always releases its Hollywood issue. For its 29th annual edition, the magazine captured 12 young actors whom they call “the stars of today and tomorrow.” From Little Women‘s Florence Pugh to Only Muders in the Building‘s Selena Gomez, these fashionable portraits paint a picture of who our next generation of talent will be.

American photographer Steven Klein was the artist behind the camera for this issue, snapping shots of the celebrities in groups and individually. “This dynamic dozen have captivated us with full-tilt portrayals of icons, heroes, villains, dukes, boxers, brooding chefs, and more,” Vanity Fair writes. “Now, first-time Hollywood cover stars Selena Gomez, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Ana de Armas, Jonathan Majors, Keke Palmer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Julia Garner, Regé-Jean Page, Emma Corrin, Hoyeon Jung, and Jeremy Allen White are gathered for the after-party of our dreams—and dazzling us with their late night party tricks.”

Each solo portrait features the star in fashionable attire they would wear on a night out. Then, in a series of short videos, the actors share some of their talents. Pugh, for instance, shows how she can step through a broom; Gomez divulges her family's favorite party snack; and Butler demonstrates how to make a napkin rose.

The lengthy issue also includes interviews with each of the stars, each of whom talks about their life and career and some of the struggles that have come with their success, as well as some of the things they hope to attain in the future. “There are so many stories to be told. Asian actors are prepared,” Squid Game actor Hoyeon says. Others, like Butler and Gomez, discuss the pressure that comes with fame, especially with social media.
