This Sports Bar in Portland Only Shows Women’s Sports for an Important Reason

Very few women's sports receive the same TV coverage or even attention as their male counterparts. However, one venue is trying to change that fact. Based in Portland, Oregon, a woman-owned sports bar cleverly called The Sports Bra caters specifically to women and women's sports. Rather than show the most popular sport on the air, they only promote female athletes and their sports.

The Sports Bra has been in operation since April 2022 after the owner Jenny Nguyen had been nurturing the idea for a bar and restaurant where women and girls can enjoy sports. “At first, I thought that The Bra would just be a place to celebrate women and girls in sports,” Nguyen says. “But now I see that it's highlighted and uplifted girls and women in so many different ways that is just amazing and beautiful to be a part of.”

The Sports Bra says its mission is “to make great food, delicious drinks, and provide a space that supports, empowers, and promotes girls and women in sports and in the community.” In addition to offering cocktails, The Bra also serves meals like burgers and salads and hosts a number of community events. On their social media, they also regularly post schedules of what sports will be on TV—ranging anywhere from tennis to boxing. Additionally, part of the business' success comes from making space for younger fans as well. Until 10:30 p.m., minors are welcome to enjoy the atmosphere; plus, there is even a children's menu.

“I want to normalize showing women's sports on TV,” Nguyen continues. “I want every bar, hotel, and restaurant to put on women's games like it was normal, but that also means having access to these games. If the media doesn't show it, how can we play it? And if we can't play it, how can it grow? It's an entire cycle that needs to be fixed and really it all starts with investment.”

If you're ever in Portland, be sure to stop by The Sports Bra. You can also support their business by purchasing merch from their online store.

The Sports Bra is a sports bar in Portland, Oregon, that only shows women's sports on the TV.

Classic-Inspired Ceramic Vessels Are Decorated With 360 Degrees of Stories Terracotta Blues Ceramics by Clara Holt

For centuries, pottery has not only served as functional tools but also as works of art. Artist Clara Holt collaborates with Chiara Zoppei to continue this tradition. Together, they create Terracotta Blues. This striking series of blue and red ceramic pieces recall ancient aesthetics from Greece and Italy. Etched into these beautiful vases are dreamy narratives inspired by myths, making them a vision to behold.

In this project, Zoppei—who works as a ceramist in Milan—produced a series of terracotta ceramics based on classical forms. These vases were then passed onto Holt, who embellished their surface with her illustrations. To do this, she employed the sgraffito technique, where a layer of slip (a mixture of clay, pigment, and water) is applied over the surface of the pot. Then, she used a sharp tool to scratch and carve the design, which slowly revealed the natural color of the clay vessel below. This resulted in the striking combination of blue slip and natural terracotta red.

As for what Holt etches into the vases, there are many identifiable figures such as mermaids and winged humans, as well as numerous animals. “In Terracotta Blues, there is no clear and recognizable subject, no precise story,” Holt explains to My Modern Met. “They are dreamlike scenes, imaginary characters that leave room for interpretation. For example, in one vase there is a mermaid hypnotized by a jellyfish; in another, a warrior mermaid armed with a sword and shield against two giant octopuses…” This freedom allows viewers to immerse themselves in these 360 artworks and find the motifs that speak to them.

Scroll down to see more art from the Terracotta Blues series, and follow Holt's Instagram to keep updated on her latest projects.

Lyrical Illustrations Celebrate the Diversity of Wildlife and the Joy of Observation Watercolor Illustrations by Vitor Velez

Before photography, it was up to artists to document plants and animals in scientific illustrations. Poland-based artist Vitor Velez draws inspiration from this age-old practice in his series of mixed-media illustrations. Using a combination of colored pencils, pens, and watercolors, he captures a breadth of wildlife.

From foxes to whales, these drawings cover a variety of species. Velez traces his love for nature to his childhood, where he honed his skills by copying illustrations from encyclopedias. Now, he makes his own notes that border the colorful portraits of animals both large and small. His artistic handwriting flies across the page, sometimes merging with the drawings in an aesthetic that is all his own.

In addition to rendering the full body of these animals, Velez also makes smaller illustrations of the details, like eyes and pawprints, which demonstrate his keen observation.

“I draw parallels between my art and scientific illustration with regard to the level of attention to the level of detail and singular characteristics of each animal I paint, but I also pursue a personal interpretation beyond a mere realistic representation,” Velez tells My Modern Met. “Through my journey, I have learned that every single creature holds its own distinct beauty, and I find myself falling in love with every single one I spend time observing and sketching.”

Aaron Jenkin Timelapse Video

Even if we cannot see it, the Earth is constantly in motion. Cornwall-based photographer Aaron Jenkin captures just how much the planet rotates in a stunning timelapse video of the British coast. Using an equatorial mount—a device that has a rotational axis parallel to the Earth's axis of rotation—he condensed two hours into just under 15 seconds, during which time we see the horizon tilt to a dramatic angle.

“I captured a timelapse of the Milky Way in Cornwall last night,” Jenkin says in the video caption. He set up his camera with a view of a rocky cliffside, the ocean, and a starry night sky. As boats travel across the water and beams of light flash above, the camera follows the rotation of the planet and turns the picture on its side. The amazing sight already accumulated over five million views on TikTok.

When Jenkin is not photographing the skies of Cornwall, he travels to other distant locations to reveal their less-seen beauty. One of his most viewed timelapse videos captures the sky in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park in New Zealand, which is one of the darkest places on Earth. The lack of light pollution in the area is why the International Dark Sky Association has labeled it as a dark sky reserve.

“Just watching the stars above, in awe of how much I could see with the unaided eye. I could clearly see The Dark Horse Nebula, and could even make out the dust clouds of the milky way reflected in the water,” he says. “I've never seen such a clear reflection, and after seeing that I knew my timelapse was going to be pretty special.”

Be sure to follow Jenkin on TikTok and Instagram to see more amazing photography.

Lyrical Illustrations Adorn Ceramic Dishes With Folk Art-Inspired Stories Painted Pottery by Christine Sutton

Ordinary plates and bowls are transformed into works of art by Christina Sutton, aka Little Bird Painting. Based in Montana, she uses the beauty of her natural surroundings as inspiration for whimsical illustrations of animals. The imagery is rendered in a charming style reminiscent of traditional printmaking techniques.

From majestic flying owls to fluffy foxes, her art features an array of critters usually framed by a border of flora. While the characters vary in each creation, Sutton's pieces are united by a unique aesthetic and limited color palette of black, yellow, red, and blue. While black serves as the primary color, other hues function as embellishments to the flowers blossoming on the vines. Coupled with the white ceramic, this combination results in plates and bowls that are visually arresting to look at.

Sutton's artistic background is in painting and printmaking. “I began making pottery when a good friend got a kiln, and sort of taught me how to make a pinch pot, and I started making little bowls and haven’t looked back,” Sutton tells My Modern Met. “I really love folk art, and I think I’m inspired by animals and plants in my own environment at home and in the mountains in Montana. I also really enjoy printmaking, and I think a lot of the images on my pottery I have worked out in block printing.”

You can purchase available items via Sutton's website, and keep up to date with her latest work by following the artist's Instagram.

105-Year-Old WWII Veteran With No Living Relatives Receives Over 3,000 Birthday Cards

On April 21, 2023, World War II veteran Ernest Horsfall turned an incredible 105 years old. Born in West Yorkshire in 1918, he has lived through 27 different Prime Ministers and five British monarchs and still has plenty of memories about his long life. In the months leading up to his milestone birthday, Royal British Legion made a call for people to send Horsfall birthday cards, as the vet has no living relatives of his own. In the end, Horsfall accumulated over 3,000 birthday cards, including one from King Charles III.

Horsfall served in the British military during WWII, earning the role of a sergeant in the British Army's Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. After leaving the service, he worked as a private pilot for 50 years. Although Horsfall was married and had one son as well as a sister, he has no surviving relatives. “Ernest lives in a residential home and has no immediate family, so the RBL's Blackpool branch have started an appeal to send him birthday cards,” the Royal British Legion tweeted, including also a mailing address for people to send their cards.

“The Second World War generation is inevitably diminishing, but occasions like this are an opportunity for the RBL to remind everyone that their service and sacrifice means something and will never be forgotten,” says Rachel Venables, the membership engagement manager for the Royal British Legion. Horsfall was over the moon to open so many cards. His girlfriend also visited from Iceland to be with him on his special day.

Horsfall credits his long life to “living as happy as you can” and keeping “a straight mind.” We wish him many more happy years.

Here’s Why People Are Adding Salt to Their Coffee Instead of Sugar
Why You Should Try Adding Salt to Your Coffee

Everyone has their own way of preparing a cup of joe. While some add cream or sugar to their brew, others prefer to keep it black. However, not many know that there's a third option to try out; one that removes almost all of the bitterness. A Twitter user by the name of BirdRespecter shared a fun food hack, whereby adding salt (and not sugar) to your coffee can eliminate the bitter taste.

While this tip is not exactly new, it isn't as well-known as it should be. “Works like a charm, especially on cheap stuff,” BirdRespecter adds. All you need to do is add a pinch of salt to a cup of black coffee, give it a stir, and taste. Suddenly the brew becomes much more palatable without much work.

There's a scientific explanation for why this method is so effective. “Your tongue has a bunch of taste receptors…on it and what it's generally doing is detecting sodium ions crossing a membrane, and you experience saltiness. And with it, though, you also experience some synergistic effects,” James Hoffman, a YouTuber and barista, explains. “Generally, saltiness can amplify sweetness, for example, and it can also mitigate or reduce bitterness.” However, while adding salt can greatly enhance the experience of drinking coffee, it should be used in moderation. People with high blood pressure or other medical issues should consult with their doctor before trying anything new.

Instead of adding sugar to your coffee, there is another food hack you can try. Adding salt.

The tip was recently spread on Twitter by BirdRespecter, and people quickly tried it out.

The reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

It's never too late to go back to school. Depending on personal circumstances, some people find themselves returning to the classroom in their older years to finally achieve their dreams. Such is the case for North Carolina resident Shirley Jones. After her husband passed away, she took initiative of her life and enrolled in Pitt Community College. Now, at the age of 84, she is working towards earning her GED.

Jones is a mother of two daughters and one grandchild and has lived in Greenville, North Carolina, for her entire life. Upon entering college, she was inducted into the National Adult Honors Society through Transitional Studies and is excited to pursue her scholastic ambitions.

“When asked what she liked most about PCC, Ms. Jones stated that she loved the personalities of the students and how nice everyone is. She also gives credit to her success to her teacher Mr. Mizelle and coordinator Sissy Grubbs,” Pitt Community College writes. “She tells students that PCC is the best college and that she got to where she is today by believing in herself and her dreams! Let's congratulate and motivate Ms. Jones in this incredible achievement!”

We wish Jones the best of luck on her academic path!

Robert Irwin Recreates Childhood Photo of Him and His Late Father Steve Irwin

Looking back at old photos can remind us of fond memories as well as stir up many emotions. Robert Irwin recently shared a carousel of pictures on his Instagram, one of which shows him as a toddler sitting on his late father Steve Irwin’s lap in an old utility vehicle. Although it has been 17 years since Steve's passing, the nostalgic car was never sold, as Robert recreates the precious photo as a grown young man without his father in the next slide.

The 19-year-old conservationist has a deep attachment to Steve's old car, fondly called “ute” as an abbreviation for a utility vehicle. “My dad's ute…it's a special car. From early memories when Dad would park and let me pretend to drive, to more recently when I took my driver's test in it (and somehow managed not to stall it),” he says. “I remember my first solo drive in this car after I got my license—it was to the hospital to meet my niece for the first time, right after she was born. And now, the ute still comes on road trips to this day…”

When viewed side by side, these photos are deeply emotional. In one, Robert is just 2 years old—the same age he was when Irwin died—and happily joined by his father. However, the more recent picture has a more stoic quality, because it highlights just how much Robert has grown up without Steve's presence. Irwin's wife Terri says, “I know Steve would be incredibly proud, now that Robert has his L plates, and is driving Steve's old ute.” The beloved vehicle has special significance not only to him but also to his sister Bindi as both siblings used the car for their driver's tests. Apparently, it was even used at Steve’s memorial service.

It is heartwarming to see how the Irwin family continues to keep Steve's memory alive. You can follow along with Robert’s adventures, with or without his ute, by following him on Instagram.
