Congratulations are in order for Simone Biles. The 24-year-old athlete, widely considered the greatest gymnast of all time, just got married to football safety Jonathan Owens. Biles and her now-husband split the celebration into a couple of events—first, in a civil ceremony at the Harris County Courthouse in Houston, Texas, and then a full-fledged destination wedding in Cabo, Mexico.

Biles and Owens first announced their engagement back in February 2022. The gymnast then shared a picture of Owens on one knee with the caption, “THE EASIEST YES. I can’t wait to spend forever & ever with you, you’re everything I dreamed of and more! let’s get married FIANCÉ.”

The decorated athlete has shared details of the road to her wedding day with her followers on Instagram, from her bachelorette party in Belize—a place dear to her heart as she holds Belizean citizenship through her mother—and her bridal shower to her dress fitting, featuring an encounter with Galia Lahav, who designed both her wedding dresses.

Biles and Owens officially got married on April 22 in a modest courthouse ceremony. “We had to get married ‘legally’ here in the U.S. since our wedding will be a destination wedding,” Biles explained, according to Vogue.  The gymnast posted a picture of both walking out of the door as husband and wife with the caption, “I do. [O]fficially [O]wens.” At the same time, the football player shared his own post with the caption, “My person, forever.”

As beautiful as the wedding day was, the celebrations continued over the whole weekend. The newly minted Mr. and Mrs. Owens flew down to Mexico for a beachside ceremony followed by a party at sundown. About the festivities, Owens wrote: “The perfect evening. The wedding was amazing and most importantly, my wife looked STUNNING. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate The Owens!! This weekend is one we’ll never forget.”

Simone Biles, widely considered the greatest gymnast of all time, recently got married to football safety Jonathan Owens.

Wedding bells are ringing for Millie Bobby Brown. The Stranger Things star has announced her engagement to boyfriend Jake Bongiovi. Brown announced the news with a black and white picture on Instagram, where she is being held by Bongiovi and a ring can be seen on her finger. The 19-year-old actress captioned the image with lyrics from Taylor Swift's “Lover”: “I've loved you three summers now, honey, I want 'em all.”

It is reported that the couple started dating in summer 2021 after they were seen holding hands in New York City. However, they didn't go public about their relationship until March 2022, when they appeared together on the BAFTAs red carpet. Brown then took Bongiovi as her date to the premiere of the latest season of Stranger Things. When asked about how she met Bongiovi, Brown said, “We met on Instagram—the old Instagram—and we were friends for a bit, and then, what can I say?”

If the last name of Brown's beau rings an 80s rock bell, you're not mistaken. Bongiovi is the 20-year-old son of musician Jon Bon Jovi (whose real name is John Francis Bongiovi) and karate instructor/restaurateur Dorothea Hurley. An actor like Brown, he is slated to make his film debut in Sweethearts, a romcom directed by Jordan Weiss.

Bongiovi also seemed to share the news, posting two images seemingly taken on the same day as Brown's—judging by the outfits– with the caption, “Forever.” While neither of their posts explicitly announce their engagement, the big ring on Brown's finger and their choice of the romantic phrases surely gives it away.

Two Flight Attendants Let Their Love Story Soar and Got Married in Front of a Plane Wedding in Front of Plane

A couple’s wedding venue can help tell the story of their love. For Audrey and Alex Chowbay, their wedding at the Lone Star Flight Museum in Houston, Texas, was a fitting choice. They fell in love during their in-flight training as flight attendants. In gorgeous photos captured by Kelsey Nicole Photography, the couple said their vows just under the cockpit of a plane, making the ceremony as meaningful as it was unique.

The couple met in 2018 at the flight attendant training with over 300 people in attendance. Despite the large crowd, they found each other. Audrey introduced herself to Alex, and the two quickly became friends before realizing there was something more between them.

The training lasted three weeks, and Audrey and Alex spent nearly the whole time together. They were smitten, but at the end of the training found that they were stationed in different cities. Alex and Audrey made the distance work—Alex visited often—and they were eventually placed in Houston together.

Alex had the ring to propose to Audrey for a year and a half, originally planning to pop the question with their families present. Unfortunately, the pandemic nixed that idea, so she waited until Christmas Eve in 2020 to propose in front of her family with Audrey’s family on FaceTime. The ring was disguised as a gift.

With their wedding slated for September 3, 2022, the women had started to look for venues in the Houston area. They wanted something that felt different from other weddings they had been to. When they finally decided to focus on a shared love of flying, Alex and Audrey landed at the perfect place.

“We're both obviously in aviation, but both of our families are also in aviation. We both just grew up with airplanes around us,” Alex said. “So I was like, ‘How cool would it be if we found a way to pull this off?'”

The couple worked with TailoredxTwo Wedding Planning, and the venue provided a conceptual jumping-off point for the rest of the nuptials. This included plane-shaped place cards and a welcome sign reminiscent of a passport. Beyond aviation, Alex included nods to her Hindu culture, including a sangeet inside of a rehearsal dinner, wearing a lehenga, and incorporating marigolds, which are popular at Indian weddings. (After the ceremony, she changed into a suit.)

Many children have dreamed of being Disney Princesses—glamorous gowns and all. And now, thanks to Allure Bridals, their adult selves can make that childhood fantasy a reality by way of its Disney Fairy Tale wedding dresses. The collection has gorgeous gowns inspired by Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Rapunzel, Snow White, and Tiana. Each dress, and its corresponding Disney Princess, evoke the spirit of the character it’s emulating, whether that's through the surface details or silhouette of the dress.

The 2023 Disney Fairy Tale wedding dresses are the fourth collaboration between Allure Bridal and Disney. This fact challenges designers to make each gown unique and different from previous years. It’s also Disney’s centennial, which added some pressure to create show-stopping designs.

To do this, designers emphasized the little details that make an overall big impact on the dress, such as beading and lace appliqués. Although the styles lean towards classic, Allure Bridals was sure to incorporate trends including voluminous sleeves, asymmetrical necklines, and high-quality fabrics sans lace or other embellishments.

While inspired by the Disney Princesses, the collection is first and foremost beautiful dresses that aren’t overtly Disney. In other words, you don’t have to be a “Disney adult” to appreciate and want to rock these gowns. They are meant for anyone who wants to feel like a princess on their wedding day.

The gowns are available in sizes 0 to 30 and come with a price tag ranging from $1,799 to $10,000. View the entire collection on the Allure Bridals website.

Ukrainian Wedding Planner Opens Up About Adapting to War and Still Finding Joy in Life

Oksana Bratseiko, a 29-year-old wedding planner, has been working in Ukraine’s wedding industry for seven years. Living and working in Kyiv, she has dealt with the repercussions of Russia’s attacks for almost a year now. Recently, Bratseiko shared her firsthand account of what life has been like for her professionally, and how couples have been able to celebrate their love for one another.

“Wedding planners have always had a lot of responsibility,” Bratseiko shares. “You have to live up to a couple's expectations—but it's especially tough right now, when Russia's brutal assault on Ukraine has everyone's nerves strained.” Her company, Forever Bride Wedding Agency, has had a plethora of challenges in this new, overwhelming landscape.

Between February and June 2022, the first months following Russia’s initial attacks on Ukraine, Kyiv alone registered 9,120 marriages. That is eight times more than the 1,110 marriages in the same period in 2021. That being said, the size and scope of an actual ceremony has changed. Bratseiko says, “Peoples' fantasies haven't fundamentally changed. Girls still want beautiful wedding dresses and stunning photographs—but they're putting off their ‘perfect weddings' until the end of the war. My team organized very few weddings in 2022 because most couples didn't bother with a big event: they opted for modest, last-minute weddings at Kyiv's City Hall.” So, the weddings that Bratseiko has had to plan are expectedly smaller, cheaper, and most times, under an intense time-crunch.

Bratseiko describes two weddings that particularly highlight the vehemency of wedding planning during wartime. Vadym and Anna were set to tie the knot on February 25, 2022, the day Russia launched its full-scale invasion. They obviously paused wedding preparations, and it took until May 2022 to relaunch them. Their wedding was the first one Forever Bride Wedding Agency organized under Russia’s attacks. Bratseiko says it was reimagined as a “stylish and classic ceremony with about thirty guests,” with plans for a bigger celebration during peacetime.

Another couple, Roman and Victoria, had been planning since November 2021. Most of their caterers and contractors had already been booked. “Victoria's father was serving on the front lines in eastern Ukraine with the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” Bratseiko says, “and they didn't know when he'd be able to come home.” So, in June 2022, they made the decision to pause plans.

In Ukraine, it is customary for guests to bring bouquets of flowers for the newlyweds. Roman and Victoria thought of Victoria’s father, instead. Bratseiko explains that army vehicles seldom last very long, due to heavy shelling. So, “in lieu of flowers,” Bratseiko says, “Victoria collected funds to go toward buying an off-road vehicle for her father's unit.” They raised all of the money within a month of the wedding. Even more incredible, Victoria’s father was finally granted leave to attend. “We dug straight into preparations and arranged an intimate, vibrant wedding in about a month,” Bratseiko says.

Currently, Ukraine is under martial law, meaning that the government can impose restrictions on civilians for the better interest of the country. Bratseiko’s team has worked hard to comply with these new regulations. Ukraine’s curfew is set at 11 p.m., so Bratseiko has had to adapt wedding schedules to fit all of the typical celebratory events, but make sure that no one is in trouble. She explains, “We have to work frantically to dismantle all the decorations in time for our contractors to get home before 11 p.m.” As well, due to systemic Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid, starting in October 2022, power outages are a constant issue for Ukrainians. Bratseiko says her solution is to find venues that come with generators. “These are pricier,” she says, “but it's worth it for avoiding the extra stress of a blackout.”

Arguably most importantly, Bratseiko has had to navigate the psychological and emotional welfare of her clients. Weddings are always full of hard decisions and intense emotions, but Bratseiko has described, “The war has heightened everyone's emotions.” To manage this overwhelming change to public wellbeing, she says she has “more frequent check-ins in the run-up to the big day.”

Beyond her new professional challenges, though, her personal life has dramatically changed. “I live in Kyiv with my husband and our young daughter, and I'm often very scared,” she admits. “My dad's a soldier, and I worry about his safety. I have lots of friends fighting on the front lines.” Through all of the hardships Bratseiko and Ukrainians have faced, love has been a welcome and unifying element. “Planning weddings during wartime is like a light in the dark,” she says. “Couples in love are very inspiring. Yes, organizing a wedding at a time like this isn't easy, but it gives a boost to everyone's life.”

Scroll below to see pictures of the beautiful ceremonies Bratseiko and her Forever Bride Wedding Agency team has planned.

Bratseiko's team has worked hard to not only ensure the safety and happiness of their couples, but also to comply with Ukraine's new regulations, including 11 p.m. curfews.

Apollo 11 Astronaut Buzz Aldrin Turns 93 and Gets Married To Celebrate the Occasion

In July 1969, Buzz Aldrin became one of the first two people to ever walk the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 mission. After retiring from NASA two years later, he became an advocate for space exploration. Now, he has reached another milestone—he has tied the knot. The legendary astronaut turned 93 years old; and as part of the celebration, he married his longtime partner, Dr. Anca Faur, in a small ceremony in Los Angeles.

“On my 93rd birthday & the day I will also be honored by Living Legends of Aviation I am pleased to announce that my longtime love Dr. Anca Faur & I have tied the knot,” he shared, along with a couple of pictures of the wedding reception. “We were joined in holy matrimony in a small private ceremony in Los Angeles & are as excited as eloping teenagers.” The bride wore a glittering long dress, while the groom  donned a tuxedo featuring his medals on his lapel.

With the news of Aldrin’s now fourth marriage making headlines, many have been wondering, who is Anca Faur? In addition to being Aldrin's partner for the last four years, she is an accomplished woman in her own right and has a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Faur was also previously a board member at the California Hydrogen Business Council. Since 2019, she has been the executive vice president of Buzz Aldrin Ventures, the former astronaut's company.

As for Aldrin, though he’s stepped away from NASA decades ago, the nonagenarian is still very involved with space exploration. Over the last decade, Aldrin—who spent about two hours on the Moon’s surface and made three space walks as pilot of the 1966 Gemini 12 mission—has called for a  human mission to Mars. Recalling his trip to the Moon in a New York Times op-ed in 2013, he wrote: “Now I see the Moon in a far different light—not as a destination but more a point of departure, one that places humankind on a trajectory to homestead Mars and become a two-planet species. It is time to lay the groundwork for effective global human exploration of space.”

Though Mars is still a goal for humankind in the future, Aldrin has marital bliss to enjoy in the present. It has already started off great thanks to the outpouring of support and well wishes for his birthday. Before posting the wedding announcement, the former astronaut thanked the public for their kind words. “Thank you for all of the Happy Birthday wishes and heartfelt goodwill! It means a lot and I hope to continue serving a greater cause for many more revolutions around the sun!!” he posted. “Onward and upward and best wishes to all of you as well!

There are all different types of marriage proposals, including everything from very intimate moments to huge gestures in front of hundreds or thousands of people. With such variety in ways to propose, it can be difficult to be creative; however, one man in Japan did something truly epic to ask his girlfriend to marry him—he traveled across his native country to pop the question with the help of Google Earth. The result was the message “Marry Me” and a heart with an arrow through it drawn on a map of Japan with the use of a GPS tracker.

The monumental romantic gesture was produced by Yasushi Takahashi, aka Yassan, who first came up with the proposal idea in 2008. After planning the route, he quit his job and spent six months driving around and exploring places he had never been to before. When he was done, he uploaded the data to Google Earth and saw his message come alive in bright yellow letters, along with a heart of the island of Hokkaido. Needless to say, the ambitious romantic's partner, Natsuki, said yes. But the story doesn't end there. This incredible journey leading to that one binding word opened up new paths for Yassan.

The amorous adventurer's elaborate proposal was then recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest GPS drawing done by an individual, a record he still holds to this day. The GWR states: “The largest GPS drawing is 7,163.67 km (4,451 miles) long and was created by Yasushi Takahashi (Japan), in Japan, on 9 June 2010.”

Now, the creator regularly roams cities around the world to produce city-sized drawings. According to his website, Yassan is a “professional GPS artist with more than 1,400 artworks” and has drawn over more than 100,000 kilometers (about 62,137 miles) in 24 countries. “I regard GPS art as ‘a tool for experiencing local history and culture,'” he states. “By moving, I draw something, and at the same time, I come into contact with history and culture, deepening my understanding of the region.”

When it comes to weddings, many brides opt for some form of DIY. Although this typically pertains to decor, Veronika Lindberg Heino— better known as Kika—did something practically unheard of. She knit and crocheted her wedding dress. And not only that, she did it in just 45 days and documented the entire thing online. The result was a beautiful garment that utilized various stitch techniques to culminate in a one-of-a-kind dress.

Kika chronicles the entire odyssey in a 46-minute-long video on her YouTube channel. The wedding unfolded organically, as she and her then-fiancé had just bought a home and wanted to throw a housewarming party. At the same time, they had been engaged for over a year, so it seemed like the perfect occasion and place to have their wedding.

The wedding planning then began. Kika had initially thought to make her own dress but quickly dismissed the idea. The longer she looked online, however, the more apparent it became that she should just go for it. She ordered 50 skeins of pure silk yarn, totaling less than $300, and admits she took a leap of faith. “I have no idea in three weeks' time if it’s going to be tears and frustration,” she said at the time, “and maybe it’s not gonna go at all as planned. But right now I feel really good about it.”

Kika spent time sketching possible dress designs before deciding to dive in and start knitting. And in a self-fulling prophecy, there were some tears with the project. About a week before her big day, she had to rip out a large part of the work because she just wasn't happy with it. But she ended up finishing the dress on a Tuesday, just in time to be married the following Saturday.

“I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who’s been following along my journey of making this dress,” Kika wrote to her Instagram followers, whom she credits with helping her bring the dress to life. “Every comment, DM, and like has given me the energy to keep knitting all throughout moving homes and planning this wedding in only 1.5 months time, thank you.”

A wedding day lives on forever through photography. That’s why making sure the picture of your big day is snapped by a trusted photographer; you don’t want to leave anything up to chance. In doing so, you might miss amazing shots like the one that Calgary wedding photographer Sarah Pukin snapped of a couple and their beloved pup. As Callie and Travis Jones posed for a picture under their flower-lined arch, their dog Luna stood between them. To say Luna was happy her pawrents tied the knot is an understatement; she is literally grinning from ear to ear!

The entire wedding day was a busy one (as most are), but the laid-back couple chose a beautiful setting that was a dream for Pukin. “Their venue was a literal playground for me as a wedding photographer—there were so many unique spots to create and capture artistic angles with,” she tells My Modern Met. “The whole day flowed in a laid-back nature with no set schedule for things just allowing everyone to mingle, enjoy, and celebrate!”

Things were made even better with the addition of Luna. “I am dog obsessed,” Pukin admits. “I think everyone who comes across my website or has met me knows this. So, Luna was a pleasure and a gem.” The pup did great through all of the family photos, and it wasn’t until Pukin was going through and selecting the final images that she saw Luna's grin. “Her smile was perfect and she did a really good job posing for the photo!”

For every wedding day that Pukin documents, she strives to tell a couple's story in an honest and organic way. Moments like Luna’s smile show that Pukin has done her job of helping to foster an environment in which people and pups are relaxed and happy.

And as for other dogs who want to follow in Luna’s footsteps? Pukin welcomes it. “Any dog that wants to photo bomb is welcome too in my books!”

Just as a couple got engaged on a mountain in Canada, nature shot a lightning streak to seemingly give its approval. Although this sounds like something out of a storybook, it really happened—and photographer Danika Camba was there to capture it. The once-in-a-lifetime picture shows the exact moment that Alisa Hemming told her boyfriend Liam Duncan that yes, she would marry him. In the background of their embrace is the white-purple lightning bolt, adding an extra bit of magic to an already joyous occasion.

Duncan booked the photography session with Camba, but wanted to keep the engagement a total surprise. In order to do so, he told Hemming that it was going to be a standard couple’s photography session. “We started on a small trail on the backside of Knox Mountain in Kelowna British Columbia,” Camba tells My Modern Met, “and as we were walking I took a few photos of them and chatted a bit—nothing out of the ordinary of a ‘normal couples photography session.’”

It was raining as they were walking up the mountain, and the group had already seen a couple of flashes of lightning. But they couldn’t turn around. “We were right at the viewpoint already,” Camba explains, “and to Ailsa’s great surprise, her parents (from Vancouver) and her best friends (from Ontario) were standing there!” Duncan then got down on one knee and asked Hemming to marry him; that’s when the thunder rumbled and lightning struck.

The weather wasn’t at the top of Camba’s mind as she was photographing the moment. She was too focused on the proposal itself. “But looking back,” she says, “it makes sense that I got the shot since the lightning was so close, and at that point, I was shooting many frames since it was THE proposal moment, so I’m pretty on the ball and shooting lots during that kind of moment. Sure enough, I scrolled through and checked the back of the camera during all the excitement, and there it was!”
