Ethereal Sleeping Figures Gracefully Emerge From Blocks of Raw Wood

Ethereal characters emerge from large pieces of wood in the art of Akiko Mimasu. The Japanese artist carves tranquil, slumbering faces atop long chunks of timber, each of which appears to be safely wrapped inside the wooden log. Wearing plush hardware, these sleeping figures look completely at ease, reposing comfortably inside the block of wood. Each face is carefully carved to reveal a youthful, tender expression with closed eyes.

Emotional Portrait of Mary of Nazareth Emerges From Exquisite High-Relief Sculpture

Poland-based artist Dominik Wdowski creates realistic high-relief sculptures that emerge from a two-dimensional background. One of his most recent works of art depicts an emotional Mary of Nazareth who turns toward the viewer at the moment she realizes she will become the mother of Jesus Christ. Entitled Annuntiato (or annunciation), Wdowski spent over 18 months bringing this piece to life in plasticine clay.

Restaurateurs Trade Sandwiches for a Painting That Ends up Being Worth Over $250K

What would you trade for your favorite meal? Back in the 1970s, a family-owned restaurant in Ontario, Canada, used their homecooked cuisine to make trades with other makers in their community—and unknowingly collected a valuable work of art in the process. In exchange for warm grilled cheese sandwiches, Irene and Tony Demas received a rare painting by Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis. Today, that painting is worth over $250k.
